The Amalfi Coast and the island of Ischia are two of the most enchanting destinations in the Gulf of Naples and Campania. If you want to travel directly from the Amalfi Coast to Ischia (or vice versa), there are seasonal crossings with passenger-only hydrofoils (cars and motorcycles cannot be embarked).

Hydrofoils to Ischia depart from Amalfi and Positano. Crossings are run by the ferry companies Alilauro and Capitan Morgan and are active mainly on weekends in high season, from April to the end of October.

There are no direct crossings to Procida; hydrofoils going there make a stop in Ischia first.

Types of boats

Passenger-only hydrofoils

  • Passengers only: No vehicles can embark on these hydrofoils.

  • Crossing time: The Amalfi-Positano-Ischia journey time is about 90 minutes, but may vary depending on the company or any additional stops.

  • Services on board: Air conditioning and restrooms on all boats, and a small snack bar on some boats.

Scenic tour boats

These are small boats used for day tours from Ischia to the Amalfi Coast.

  • Daily excursions: Departure from Ischia to Amalfi and Positano, returning in the late afternoon.

  • One-way ticket: One-way tickets are always available.

Note: There are no regular ferries from Amalfi to Ischia, only passenger hydrofoils that depart from the Amalfi pier, make a stop in Positano, and then continue on to Ischia Porto. Make sure you check the season and ferry times before departure, because direct crossings aren’t available year round or even every day, but only from Thursday to Sunday.

Positano-Ischia ferry schedule

High season (April-October)

Crossings are concentrated on certain days of the week; check this page to see which days they are running.

In peak summer season (July-August) additional runs may be added on weekends, based on tourist demand.

  • Typical departure times for the first vessels from Amalfi are between 8:30 and 9:30 am, with the last departure around 4 pm.

Low season (November-March)

There aren’t any direct crossings during low season, so you’ll need to stop in Naples (Napoli), Capri, or Sorrento.

We recommend traveling to the Amalfi Coast by land during low season, because sea crossings are more susceptible to cancellations due to bad weather and rough seas during the winter.

Hydrofoil companies

The companies that offer connections between Ischia and the Amalfi Coast are:

  • Alilauro/Alicost

  • Capitan Morgan

Departure and arrival points

Amalfi

  • Departures from Molo Pennello, which is easy to get to from the historic center (5 minutes’ walk from the Duomo).

  • If you arrive by car, consider the limited availability of parking in high season.

Positano

  • The hydrofoil stops at Spiaggia Grande.

  • The ticket office is located near the pier, but during high season it can be crowded.

  • Positano is almost entirely pedestrian, so make sure you carefully plan how much time you’ll need for embarking and disembarking. If you have luggage with you, it’s best to use a porter service.

Ischia

  • Hydrofoils arrive at Ischia Porto, the island’s main port. From there you can take an EAV bus or a taxi to get to other destinations on the island (Casamicciola, Forio, Lacco Ameno, Sant’Angelo).

Practical tips

Book in advance

In high season, seats for ferry crossings (hydrofoils) on the Amalfi-Positano-Ischia ferry route sell out quickly, since there’s limited passenger capacity. We recommend booking your ticket online.

Check the timetables carefully

Direct crossings aren’t available on a daily basis. At the moment, the ferry companies operate the route from Thursday to Sunday.

Arrive at least 20 minutes in advance

The Amalfi and Positano piers are often very crowded in the morning. Arriving early will help you avoid stress and last-minute rushes.

Luggage and supplements

  • Usually one carry-on bag is included in the ticket price.

  • For larger suitcases, there’s a small extra fee of 2-3 euros.

  • If you have more luggage, check the supplemental costs with the ticket office or online.

Rough seas and bad weather

Hydrofoils are more sensitive to waves than ferries. Crossings are suspended when seas are rough. Check the weather forecast or contact the ferry company's call center for real-time updates.

On-board services and journey time

  • Average duration: About 1 hour and 30 minutes from Amalfi to Ischia (with a stop in Positano).

  • Indoor seating, air conditioning, and restrooms on board.

  • Small snack bar: Some boats have a coffee bar where you can buy drinks and snacks.
